I don’t normally pay much attention to Facebook campaigns that tell you to ‘like’ a page or post and
something will be donated to charity. More often than not nothing is ever donated and you've instead been duped as a quick way for that post or page to gain like’s. It’s obviously immoral, capitalising on people’s willingness to give to charity; although it should be said to them that they’d do a better job by donating directly or helping out with charity work. All that said, I did ‘like’ the page currently being run by American Standard.
American Standard is a manufacturer of plumbing fixtures, such as toilets and taps, although their co-owned Ideal Standard company is more relevant to this blog because it operates in the UK. They are currently running a campaign on Facebook called Flush For Good. This campaign has come about to tackle the need for more toilets and proper sanitation in developing countries, a campaign that’s very much needed as the sad figure of 2,000 children dying each die due to a lack of proper sanitation very much shows. That’s 3 children every minute, and a massive 1.5 billion other people missing out on the sanitation systems that we take for granted.
For every 100 like’s or shares, or purchase of an American Standard Champion toilet, the company will donate a sanitary toilet pan for use in the developing world. This will hopefully help save thousands of lives, as this technology allows proper sanitation in places where the plumbing infrastructure doesn't exist. It’s a small plastic toilet pan that connects to a latrine pit. A tight seal around keeps flies out of latrine pit and prevents cross-contamination. They’re affordable, plus easy to maintain and use, making them perfect for use in the developing world. Take a look at how one of them works below.
You can make a pledge to save water when liking or sharing the campaign on Facebook, such as turning off the water while you brush your teeth, taking shorter showers and only flush the toilet once. Thanks for these pledges the campaign has so far this year donated 226 sanitary toilet pans around the world, but there’s an endless need for more so get liking and sharing!
Here at Bathroom World we’re big supporters of saving water by avoiding unnecessary uses, and we’ll always encourage people to think about their usage when using one of our many bathroom products.
